What You Actually Need in Your Bag

on Jun 30 2026
Before leaving the house with a baby, it can feel like you need to bring everything. Extra outfits. Backup outfits. Things you might need, just in case. The bag fills up fast — and somehow, even full, it still doesn't feel like enough. The mental load comes with it: did I pack enough, did I pack the right things, what if we're out longer than planned. What You Actually Need (Most Days) Over time, it usually comes back to a few simple things: Nappies Wipes A spare layer Something for feeding Something small for you — water, a snack, tissues, lip balm That's it. Not every "what if." Just enough to get through. The Things You Don't Need A full change of outfit for every possible weather change. Three toys "in case one doesn't work." A backup for the backup. Most of it never gets used. It just sits at the bottom of the bag, taking up space and making it harder to find the things you actually reach for. If something hasn't come out of the bag in the last few outings, it's probably safe to leave it home next time. For Longer Days Out Some days aren't a quick trip to the shops — they're a full morning, or an afternoon that runs later than planned. On those days, the list grows a little: an extra nappy or two, a second spare layer, a bit more food than you think you'll need. But the core doesn't change. It's still nappies, wipes, a layer, feeding, something for you. You're just packing a bit more of each, not a different kind of bag altogether. What Makes the Biggest Difference It's not how much you pack — it's how easily you can use what you've packed. When everything has a place, and you can reach what you need without digging, the whole day feels different. Less frantic. Less second-guessing. More steady. When You Forget Something Anyway You will, at some point — everyone does. The nappy bag with no spare nappy. The outing where you realise, three hours in, that you left the snacks on the kitchen bench. It will be okay. You'll ask at the chemist, or borrow a wipe from another parent, or just head home a little earlier than planned. None of it undoes the morning you've had. You'll figure it out, like you always do.
