Less than you might think. Somewhere safe to sleep with fitted sheets, a few swaddles, simple clothes, nappies and wipes, and a way to carry or move your baby. The rest can wait.

Stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of starting to roll, which for many babies is somewhere around three to five months. Wrap with arms free from then, or move to a safe sleeping bag.

Both are soft and breathable. Cotton muslin is light and airy, great for warmer weather. Bamboo has a silkier feel and a little more stretch, which many parents love for wrapping.

Many ergonomic carriers can be used from the newborn stage when fitted correctly. Check the size guide for your carrier and keep your baby's face visible and airway clear at all times.
